About

Sajede Sharifi, born in 1984, lives and works in Paris. She trained at the Iranian House of Photography then at the BBC World Service Trust in 2008.

After studying sociology at the University of Tehran, she graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles in 2014 then from the International Center of Photography in New York in 2015. Her work questions photography in as a document, combining fictional narration and objective result. At the same time and in connection with her documentary mission, she is building a photographic corpus which questions the language and the veracity of the image as a document. Her view does not consider documentary photography as a constant and faithful restitution of reality but rather as an account that plays with reconstructions and archetypes, blurring the boundaries between objectivity and fiction, authenticity and imagination.

Photography is naturally the result of experience and attention to the details of the world. The photographer, like a cook, poet, sportsman or dancer, is captivated by the active world, and every photographer who limits herself to photography is always in need of reflection. We take a photo in less than a second, but its impact lasts a long time. Photography, despite its simple appearance, is a mysterious art. Just as you read this, millions of photos are being taken all over the world. It is so deep that it can carry the burden of longing and mourning.

Photography and its marking are like a creative journey, a journey that is not logical but intuitive, not programmed but spontaneous. The universe is the photographer's companion in this two-sided journey.

It just depends on what the universe is offering at that time. The more an image comes to mind, the more metaphorical it is. It is a great moment when we find the image we are looking at, like a childhood memory, a dream or a déjà vu, and it becomes a part of us.

Although Sajede Sharifi's photos are often complex, her working method is simple. She feels the potential of the photo. She follows the rhythm of daily life at the time of taking the photo. She places herself alongside situations and remains present.

Through his photos, Sajede Sharifi searches for the mysterious identity of the universe, believing that a good photo creates uncertainty and poses a question instead of providing an answer. Sometimes, before we even understand ourselves, the photos strangely tell us where we are going.
